Welcome to the Ryukyu Shorinji-Ryu Karate Association

Traditional Okinawan karate is more than a collection of techniques. It is a method of developing discipline, awareness, physical ability, character, and respect.

Training through the Ryukyu Shorinji-Ryu Karate Association is designed to provide students with a structured path from their first class through advanced study and, for those who choose that path, instructor development.

The goal is not simply to collect ranks. The goal is to understand the art, preserve its traditions, and become capable of carrying that knowledge forward.

The Student Journey

Every Rank Has a Purpose.

Progress through traditional karate is a journey of development. Each stage builds upon the last while introducing greater responsibility, understanding, and personal discipline.

STAGE 01

New Student

Your first step into the dojo. Learn what to expect, how to prepare, how to train safely, and the etiquette expected of every practitioner.

STAGE 02

White Belt

Establish the foundations of karate through basic stances, strikes, blocks, movement, conditioning, terminology, and dojo discipline.

STAGE 03

Kyu Training

Develop stronger fundamentals while introducing greater technical complexity, combinations, kata, application, conditioning, and controlled partner training.

STAGE 04

Brown Belt

Refine technique, increase training intensity, improve understanding of kata and application, and begin developing the maturity expected of a future black belt.

STAGE 05

Black Belt

Black belt marks the beginning of deeper study rather than the end of training. Students begin developing greater technical understanding and responsibility.

STAGE 06

Advanced Training

Advanced practitioners explore deeper curriculum, bunkai, refinement, conditioning, traditional methods, leadership, and continued personal development.

STAGE 07

Instructor Development

Qualified practitioners may begin developing the skills required to teach, mentor students, preserve standards, and represent the Association responsibly.

STAGE 08

The Journey Continues

Traditional martial arts is a lifelong pursuit. Advancement brings deeper responsibility, understanding, humility, and the opportunity to preserve the art for those who come after you.

More Than a Ranking System

Rank provides structure, but training provides the substance. The objective is to develop practitioners who understand what they practice, why they practice it, and how to carry the tradition forward.

Summer Training

Preparing for the Fall 2026 Program

Select students may participate in summer training prior to the official Fall 2026 program.

Summer sessions are intentionally limited and are offered by approval. The purpose is to establish training habits, introduce expectations, develop fundamentals, and prepare students for the next stage of instruction.
